What is a Sigmoidoscopy?
It is a technique used to detect disorders in the internal lining of your rectum and the lower part of the colon. This procedure is used when your doctor only needs to investigate the outer part of your colon.
Who Needs a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?
This procedure is used to evaluate your chances of colon or rectal cancer. If you have unusual changes in bowel movements, rectal bleeding, or abdominal pain, a flexible sigmoidoscopy may also be indicated to determine the cause of these issues.
What is the Prep for a Sigmoidoscopy?
Similar to a colonoscopy, your bowel must be completely empty before your sigmoidoscopy. Your gastroenterologist may suggest an enema to cleanse your rectum and lower intestine. Please see your gastroenterologist for specific prep instructions.
